Bonded by breakups with the Jonas Brothers in their teens, Gomez says the best thing they got out of those early romances was each other
Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift may have dated Nick and Joe Jonas as teenagers, but the real love story that emerged from those whirlwind relationships was the one between the two pop icons themselves.
In a candid new interview on Therapuss with Jake Shane, Gomez opened up about the roots of her now 16-year friendship with Taylor Swift, revealing it all began in the wake of their respective breakups with the Jonas Brothers.
“At that age, we became best friends, bonded over the breakup as girls do,” Gomez said. “Then we just stuck around for all the ups and downs that came after, and here we are now 16 years later.”
Back then, Gomez was dating Nick Jonas, while Swift had a brief but high-profile romance with Joe Jonas. Though the teen relationships were short-lived, the experience created a lasting bond between the two young women, who have remained close ever since.
“We were young,” Gomez added. “We all know and love each other now and it’s so cute. We didn’t know what we were doing. But yeah, she and I like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other.”
The friendship has stood the test of time, with Swift recently attending Gomez’s 33rd birthday dinner. Over the years, the duo has publicly supported one another through personal heartbreaks, career highs, and major life changes. Both have also found love again—Gomez is engaged to music producer Benny Blanco, while Swift is in a high-profile relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce.
Gomez also recalled one of her earliest memories with Swift, which involved being among the first to hear what would become one of Swift’s most iconic songs.
“She played ‘Love Story’ for me before it was even out,” Gomez recalled. “It was one of those songs I instantly heard and thought, ‘This is one of the most beautiful songs ever.’”
As their careers evolved from Disney starlets and country-pop princesses to powerhouse artists and entrepreneurs, their bond has only grown stronger—a true testament to the value of authentic female friendship in the spotlight.
