Mariah Carey Refuses to Let Christmas End

The undisputed Queen of Christmas shares a playful yet heartfelt moment as the holiday season fades—while celebrating major personal and professional wins.

All Mariah Carey wants for Christmas, it seems, is… more Christmas. As the world ushers in a new year and holiday decorations come down, the singer who has become inseparable from the festive season is clearly not ready to say goodbye.

On Saturday, the 56-year-old superstar shared a humorous yet emotional video on social media capturing her reaction as her Christmas décor was being dismantled. Set to her song In Your Feelings, the clip shows two of Carey’s friends beginning to remove ornaments from her Christmas tree—only for the singer to burst into the room, visibly distressed, repeatedly shouting “No!” as she protests the end of her favorite season. She perfectly summed up the moment in the caption: “When they say ‘Christmas is over.’”

The video struck a chord with fans worldwide, reinforcing Carey’s long-standing status as the undisputed Queen of Christmas. Few artists are as closely tied to a season as Carey is to the holidays, thanks largely to her timeless hit All I Want for Christmas Is You.

This festive season gave Carey plenty of reasons to celebrate beyond decorations and traditions. Alongside spending time with her 14-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, the singer scored a major legal victory earlier this year. A lawsuit alleging that All I Want for Christmas Is You copied another song of the same name was officially dismissed.

In March, U.S. District Judge Monica Almadani ruled that songwriters Andy Stone—who performs under the stage name Vince Vance—and Troy Powers failed to provide sufficient evidence that Carey’s 1994 classic infringed upon their 1989 country track. Filed in November 2023, the lawsuit claimed Carey required a license and songwriting credit and sought $20 million in damages. The dismissal marked a significant win for the artist, particularly given the song’s enduring legacy.

The timing couldn’t have been more fitting. In 2024, Carey celebrated the 30th anniversary of her iconic holiday album Merry Christmas, a record that has become a cornerstone of the season. Featuring All I Want for Christmas Is You alongside beloved covers such as Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), Silent Night, and Joy to the World, the album has sold more than 18 million copies, securing its place as one of the best-selling holiday albums of all time.

Despite its massive success, Carey once had doubts about releasing a Christmas album at all. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly in 2019, she admitted she was initially hesitant. “I didn’t feel, from a strategic point of view, that it was time to do something like that,” she said. “As much as I love Christmas, I thought that the record company was off. Obviously, I couldn’t have been more wrong.”

Reflecting on the enduring magic of her signature holiday hit, Carey has remained humble about its place in her career. “‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ gives me a feeling of happiness I can’t describe, so it’s a different thing,” she explained. “Yes, it’s a hugely successful song. Do I think it’s the best song that I’ve ever written? I don’t know how to judge that. But it has its own place for me.”

As January unfolds and the ornaments are packed away, one thing is clear: for Mariah Carey, Christmas isn’t just a season—it’s a state of mind. And if she has anything to say about it, the holiday spirit never really ends.
