German prosecutors allege IS-inspired teen aided bomb attack plan that led to cancellation of Swift’s Eras Tour concerts; pop star thanks authorities for saving lives.
A Syrian teenager has been formally charged in Germany for his alleged involvement in a foiled terrorist plot targeting Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour shows in Vienna, Austria, last August. The chilling plan, which led to the abrupt cancellation of three sold-out performances, has now surfaced as one of the most serious security threats ever faced by the global pop icon and her fans.
According to a press release issued Friday by German federal prosecutors, the 17-year-old, identified only as Mohammad A., was deeply involved in assisting another suspect in Austria with building explosives intended for use at one of Swift’s concerts scheduled between August 8 and August 10, 2024, at Ernst Happel Stadium.

Authorities claim that since at least April 2024, Mohammad A. had subscribed to the ideology of the Islamic State (IS) and used online channels to connect with an Austrian counterpart who was plotting the attack. The teen allegedly provided step-by-step bomb-making instructions and even supplied a pledge of allegiance template to IS, which the Austrian suspect reportedly used to formalize his commitment to the terrorist group.
The concert promoter, Barracuda Music, canceled all three Vienna shows on August 7, one day before the first performance, citing “confirmation from government officials of a planned terrorist attack.” The abrupt decision came after Austrian police arrested two suspects in Vienna, including a 19-year-old believed to be the primary actor in the plot. A third teen, aged 17, was initially arrested but later released without charges.
The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) later confirmed that the suspects were plotting to kill “tens of thousands of people” at the concerts, The New York Times reported. The scale and gravity of the threat stunned fans and prompted immediate action by local and international authorities.
Taylor Swift, who completed the European leg of her Eras Tour later that month, addressed the terrifying situation on Instagram. “The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows,” she wrote. “But I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives.”
Swift also shared her reasoning for staying silent at the time of the threat. “I am not going to speak about something publicly if I think doing so might provoke those who would want to harm the fans who come to my shows,” she wrote. “In cases like this one, ‘silence’ is actually showing restraint.”

Despite the cancellations, Swift fans in Vienna gathered in the streets to sing her songs and exchange friendship bracelets in a spontaneous show of solidarity. “I was heartened by the love and unity I saw in the fans who banded together,” Swift said, highlighting the strength of her community in the face of fear.
No official statement has yet been released by Swift’s representatives regarding the latest developments in the case.
The Eras Tour continues to break records and inspire millions around the world, but the Vienna plot serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by high-profile performers and their audiences in today’s global climate. Thanks to swift law enforcement coordination across borders, what could have been a tragedy was averted — with vigilance, restraint, and justice now taking center stage.
