Speculation swirls over track six from The Life of a Showgirl as Swift’s friendship with Lively faces public scrutiny amid Hollywood legal drama
Another Taylor Swift album era is here — and so is the wave of pre-release speculation. When the pop superstar unveiled the tracklist for her upcoming 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, on the New Heights podcast Wednesday, one title in particular set the internet abuzz: “Ruin the Friendship.”
Swifties quickly took to social media with theories that the song, sixth on the album, might be inspired by her longtime friend, actress Blake Lively. The speculation comes at a time when the pair’s relationship has been under intense public scrutiny, following Lively’s very public legal battle with It Ends With Us co-star and director Justin Baldoni.

The drama began in December 2024 when Lively accused Baldoni of sexual harassment and launching a smear campaign. Baldoni countersued, alleging defamation and extortion. As the dispute escalated, Taylor Swift’s name surfaced in court filings — with one dismissed complaint claiming she had pressured Baldoni to accept Lively’s script changes. Lively’s team called the accusation “categorically false.”
Baldoni’s countersuit even included text exchanges in which Lively seemingly referenced Swift as “one of her dragons,” likening herself to Khaleesi from Game of Thrones. Matters intensified in May 2025 when Baldoni’s legal team attempted to subpoena Swift. Her representative dismissed the move as a “scheme to generate tabloid clickbait,” stressing that Swift had no involvement in the film’s production, casting, scoring, or editing, and had not even seen it until after its release.

Despite the rumors, neither Swift nor Lively has publicly addressed the state of their friendship. The two haven’t been spotted together in some time, though they share a history of personal and creative connections — Lively and Ryan Reynolds’ children have even been name inspirations in past Swift tracks like “Gorgeous” and “Betty.”
Adding intrigue, Swift revealed during her podcast appearance with boyfriend Travis Kelce and his brother Jason that she recorded The Life of a Showgirl during the European leg of her Eras Tour in mid-2024 — months before the It Ends With Us controversy began. “I just love it a lot. I love music,” Swift said. “I’d be physically exhausted but so mentally stimulated and excited to be creating.”
If the album was indeed written entirely during that period, the song “Ruin the Friendship” may have nothing to do with Lively at all. But until October 3, when The Life of a Showgirl officially drops, fans will be left decoding clues, connecting dots — and waiting to see if the speculation proves true.
